Aside from the vast list of changes made to many of the heroes of Overwatch 2, some of the most significant alterations to Blizzard’s hugely popular online shooter involve those made to the way that cosmetic items are acquired. While the original game allowed players to unlock randomized cosmetics from free loot boxes that were acquired by leveling up, both the loot box and level mechanics have been removed in the sequel. Instead, fans are now limited to purchasing individual cosmetic items or bundles for Overwatch Coins, which can either be bought with real cash, or unlocked in very small amounts by completing weekly challenges. The newly-added battle pass system also offers cosmetic items, but most of them are only available from the paid premium pass.

Fans of Overwatch 2 have made clear their discontent for the new monetization systems all across social media, with some recently pointing out that the game’s “Decked Out” achievements is now drastically more difficult to unlock. Although some players’ unlocks are carried over to the sequel if they played the original game and linked their Battle.net account, new players will need to invest huge sums of money if they hope to acquire 50 unlocks for any single hero. With most bundles being priced at up to $20 in the game’s shop and individual sprays and voice lines each costing 100 Overwatch Coins - the equivalent of $1 - fans would presumably need to spend a minimum of $50 to unlock the achievement.
Even then, most of the voice lines and many of the sprays aren’t always available for players to purchase, as some are only available during certain events. The new battle pass system in Overwatch 2 helps players to unlock new items at a decent pace, but fans will still need to pay $10 if they want to reap the rewards from all 80 tiers of a single battle pass.
It’s clear that the high prices of cosmetics and the lack of options to unlock items for free continue to be some of the Overwatch 2 community’s biggest complaints at the moment. Blizzard continue to roll out bug fixes and balance patches, but whether they’ll respond to this feedback and address the pricing issues is up for debate among players.
Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
