Team composition has slightly shifted due to Overwatch 2’s transition to a 5v5 format from the classic 6v6, with teams now being made up of 2 damage heroes, 2 support heroes, and a single tank hero. As any experienced Overwatch 2 player will know, supports are essential for providing the healing to teammates that’s necessary to keep a fight going, and losing your healers can often result in a quick team wipe.

The particular importance of a team’s support characters in Overwatch 2 is what prompted the user DanilOcelot on Reddit to suggest the idea of having an icon on the HUD to let players know when their support heroes are eliminated in combat. The post features an edited screenshot of the UI which includes two small icons next to the player’s ability icons in the bottom-right corner of the screen, with two icons dedicated to each of the team’s healer characters so that players can see if one or both of their supports are down.

Though the proposed feature would make things simpler for players, Overwatch 2 does feature some helpful settings that many players might not know about. In the sound tab within the settings menu, it is possible to enable a unique sound effect that plays when a teammate dies, similarly to how a sound plays when a player secures an elimination. Since the sound effect is different, players can have a much easier time knowing when they’re down a few allies during the heat of combat.

Support mains in Overwatch 2 will know how stressful the role can be, with it being common for damage and tank players to constantly be requesting healing after charging into the front lines. Many in the community agree that the Support role has become much more challenging to play in Overwatch 2 due to the array of new changes that came with the new game, too. Many fans insist that the ally health bar feature seen in a preview of the game’s upcoming PvE content should be added to the PvP modes too, as it allows for an easy assessment of the team’s condition.

Though some might argue that this clutters up the screen too much, many have certainly offered alternative ways of addressing the challenge. Fortunately for many players new and old, Overwatch 2 already provides ways of keeping an eye on your teammates, but how Blizzard might update the UI in the future is yet to be seen.

Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
