While the actual moment-to-moment gameplay saw improvement in Overwatch 2, the underlying features, monetization practices, and progression system all leave a lot to be desired. Moreover, a lot of players already feel burned out in Season 1 from a lack of variety in Weekly Challenges or the slow map rotation in Overwatch 2. Season 2 might be just a bit over two weeks away, but the current state of the game feels unsustainable in the long term.

Though hardly one of the game’s priority fixes, a player named DubsZoro seems to miss the main menu animation that featured Kiriko in favor of its current one – which brought the community to collectively think up a rather ingenious idea. Perhaps similarly to another Blizzard game like Starcraft 2, players could pick and choose from a list of animated screens featuring their favorite Overwatch 2 heroes. It would be a very simple way for Blizzard Entertainment to let people customize their game, but there’s one important caveat to consider.
It’s becoming obvious that the main menu screen is being used for advertisement purposes, showing players the new Mythic skins of Overwatch 2 in the hope that they’ll make a purchase. With Overwatch 2 turning free-to-play, it makes sense that the developers at Blizzard would want to rely on microtransactions more, which sadly also means that this advertisement space is not something they would likely be willing to part with.
With a delayed co-op campaign repackaged into smaller pieces and likely tied to Battle Pass, as well as an inferior multiplayer experience compared to its now-unavailable predecessor, Overwatch 2 will need to find a way to satisfy its disgruntled fans. Though the game has enjoyed over 35 million players in its first month, it should be Blizzard’s priority to stop the bleeding. Maybe introducing a main menu selection won’t be a part of the solution, but with games such as No Man’s Sky or Fallout 76 as examples, there’s still more than enough time for the development team to right the ship.
Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
