In a game where a talking gorilla from the moon and a religious, meditating robot are playable characters, a jetpack cat really doesn’t seem that out of place. However, the jetpack cat was ultimately scrapped from Overwatch before the game’s launch, as apparently its concept was just a little too “out there” for the development team’s liking.
Besides the scrapped jetpack cat hero, the team revealed art for a few other cancelled heroes. They included some rather unique ideas, like a large robot with a harpoon gun, a robotic hockey player, a demon, a crocodile with a jet strapped to its back, and more. For Overwatch fans that can’t get enough of the game, learning about cancelled hero designs at BlizzCon is a real treat. It gives fans a peak behind the curtain at Blizzard, and lets them get a better idea of the development team’s design process. Unfortunately for anyone impressed by these character designs, though, the fact that Blizzard decided to show them at BlizzCon likely means that they will likely stay on the cutting room floor forever.
However, maybe Blizzard will decide to revisit some of these cancelled heroes if fans make enough noise about them. Since releasing this concept art, Overwatch players on various forums seem to be most interested in the hockey playing robot and the jetpack cat hero, the latter of which has always been a bit of a curiosity for hardcore fans.
With cancelled heroes revealed, a new hero announced, the Blizzard World map shown off, and the Reinhardt animated short released, BlizzCon 2017 was more about Overwatch than it was any other Blizzard release. The show was full of exciting announcements and interesting revelations about the hero shooter, and it will be interesting to see how Jeff Kaplan and his team try to top it at next year’s show.
