Since the last hero’s release in the summer of 2019, there has been no new content featuring additional heroes. Indeed, Sigma was the last hero to be added to the Overwatch roster, though more content was evidently heading Overwatch’s way before the release of the highly-anticipated Overwatch 2.

A video featuring a mysterious teaser for the newest hero can be seen below.
Tweeted out by Overwatch’s official Twitter page, the 10-second video reveals very little in its duration. A female voice commands a group of people to retreat. She then tells someone or something to “stay down” repeatedly. Glass then shatters and the video ends abruptly on the same still of a female dressed in a scientist’s uniform next to an image of flying shards of glass or other materials. This is against the blue backdrop suggesting the recording of some experiment.
On March 16, the same Twitter account tweeted another teaser containing lore of the Overwatch universe. It was a fictional personal log of Dr. Mina Liao who wrote of the Athena project she was working on. This project apparently pertained to artificial life and how it’s something that should be more sensitively handled rather than treated with ownership as is implied to be the case in Overwatch.
March 16’s tweet, combined with the above video of something apparently wreaking havoc upon a scientist (presumably Dr. Mina Liao) and a group of followers, suggests that the next hero is coming soon. Given comments on “artificial life,” the new hero will likely be in the form of a capable robot or something similar that can hold its own against existing Overwatch characters.
Regardless of who or what the new hero is, it will be interesting to see how they stack up against the existing roster. There are some great Overwatch characters, which may make the next added hero fairly tough to rank. Hopefully, they can hold their own against the best out there.
Overwatch 2 is currently in development and will launch on an unspecified date.
