Season 4 has been confirmed to be the final season of Ozark, which first premiered on Netflix in 2017. Ozark tells the story of the Byrde family, a seemingly ordinary nuclear family from Chicago who relocate to the rural Ozarks to launder money for a ruthless Mexican cartel. Since its premiere on Netflix, the series has received mostly positive reviews, especially for the performances from its leading actors. Jason Bateman, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, won an Emmy for directing in 2019, and Julie Garner has received two consecutive Emmy’s for her performance as Ruth.

Netflix’s short teaser is narrated entirely by Ruth Langmore (Garner). A fan-favorite character, Ruth has been on the show since the beginning, starting out as a money-laundering protégé to protagonist Marty Byrde (Bateman) then moving on to her own criminal enterprise. The teaser begins where we last saw Ruth, crying as she drives down a lonesome Missouri road as she narrates, “My childhood traumas are not like yours.” She goes on to say that she’s a cursed Langmore, plagued by violence and death, as we see a mixture of new footage and scenes from part 1 of season 4, including Ruth pulling a shotgun on Marty and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney). The teaser ends with the ominous text, “The end arrives, sooner than you think.”

Part 1 of Ozark season 4 premiered on Netflix on January 21st, 2022, and consisted of the first seven episodes of the fourteen-episode season. Part 1 saw the Byrde family tested in new ways as their teenage son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) went to work for Ruth and her new business partner, the highly unpredictable heroin manufacturer Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery). It also introduced a new adversary in the form of Javi Elizandro (Alfonso Herrera), the nephew of cartel boss Omar Navarro (Felix Solis). Javi quickly proves to be a reckless and dangerous adversary to both the Byrde family and Ruth.

Ozark season 4 part 1 ended with the tragic death of Ruth’s cousin Wyatt at the hands of Javi. This is not the first family member Ruth has lost during the series, but Wyatt was arguably the most innocent. This seems to have set Ruth on a warpath, as she seeks revenge against a very powerful and seemingly untouchable enemy. However, fans will have to wait a few more months until the explosive finale is revealed.

Ozark season 4 part 2 will premiere on Netflix on April 29th, 2022.
